RSU Public TV

As the only full-powered public television station licensed to a public university in Oklahoma, RSU Public TV provides educational, cultural and general interest programming to an audience of 1.2 million viewers in northeastern Oklahoma, and the Tulsa metropolitan area.

Breaking News

The planned demise of analog television is already a reality for a large number of Rogers State University Public Television viewers who live outside Claremore and Tulsa.

One of two analog tubes failed May 26th and the television station is no longer able to broadcast a full power signal on its analog (UHF) channel. RSU Public Television General manager Dan Schiedel said the remaining tube is now handling both audio and video transmission. The repairs are only able to restore a reduced analog signal which will only reach a limited group of analog viewers in the immediate area.

Schiedel said he hopes this will serve as a reminder to television viewers that it is time to upgrade to a digital signal. By law, television stations nationwide must turn off their analog signals on Feb. 17, 2009, and broadcast exclusively in a digital format. RSU Public TV is already broadcasting a fully-digital signal and viewers with digital receivers will continue to have uninterrupted service.

“We are sorry that the fix means a decrease in service for (analog) viewers. However, with the upcoming federally-mandated switch, it would not be fiscally responsible to invest in new analog equipment, Schiedel said. He estimated the cost of replacing the out-dated analog tube could be as much as $80,000.

To continue receiving free TV reception, the nearly 16 percent of Oklahoma households that rely on over-the-air broadcast programming on analog TV sets must either purchase new television sets with built-in digital tuners, purchase converter boxes that translate the digital signal into the analog format for older television sets, or subscribe to a pay TV service like cable or satellite.

The U.S. Department of Commerce's National telecommunications and Information Administration is issuing each household up to two $40 coupons to help defray the cost of converter boxes.
